The 2nd STEAM-H Student Debate Day was held. The technology that we are

Last Tuesday 23rd of May took place the 2nd STEAM-H Student Debate Day. The technology that we are in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Malaga (Sala Rodríguez de Berlanga) and with a most interesting question: Do AI-based generative models (ChatGPT or DALL-E2) constitute tools that favour human development towards new horizons or do they reduce people's creative potential?.

These generative models are capable of creating impressive texts and visual works, and this obviously raises questions: are these tools allies or enemies of our creativity?; Could AI reduce human creative potential ... people might rely on these tools to generate content instead of developing their own unique skills and expressions. Would creativity become trivial? AI can also guide us towards new creative horizons, inspiring or stimulating the human imagination [freeing us from routine tasks and allowing us to focus on deeper and more novel ideas]. It is important to remember, however, that these tools are just that: tools. AI can be a companion, but it should never replace our power of imagination and expression. AI-based generative models can be powerful tools to expand our creative horizons, as long as we use them in a conscious and balanced way.

We learned that the use of AI can be a good complementary tool, as long as it is used in the right way. Should we limit its use or establish controls?...sometimes we do not think about the fact that we give the tool its power ourselves. Determinism or free will? The important thing is to understand what the limits of this model are - Example: #ChatGPT - The use of drugs can provide quick answers, but it is not always accurate. Question raised in the debate: to ban or not to ban their use?

It is a useful tool that should not replace genuine learning and individual work...we should not be afraid of change. This technology must be used responsibly...it must not become a shortcut to avoid these important stages of learning.. Is education a niche of misuse?...possible, however, it can help us to rethink the way we teach/educate: by encouraging critical thinking, by using the tool to contrast its results or by creating new types of evaluable activity. This is a powerful tool that must be used in a correct and balanced way. The goal of education is for students to acquire skills that will help them better understand the world.... Let's make AI our ally and not our enemy!
