Last Thursday, 24 October, The IV STEAM H Debate Conference in the Cultural Container of the University of Malaga, organised by the Telefónica-UMA Chair in collaboration with the Vice-rectorate for Culture and the Faculty of Telecommunications.

The question that formed the backbone of the debate revolved around the following questions how relationships between artificial intelligence and humans are constructed. To put it into context, the audience watched the film «Eva», directed by Kike Maíllo.

Broadly speaking, participants highlighted the opportunities for social improvement made possible by the development of artificial intelligence materialised in androids capable of performing everyday tasks. However, an important point of reflection revolved around the potential drawbacks of using this type of intelligence and how it affects our relationship with the environment and with ourselves. It was questioned whether artificial intelligence ultimately develops as an autonomous entity with its own decisions and free will, whether, when its behaviour shows morally and ethically undesirable inclinations, such as hatred or anger, we have the right to switch it off without further ado, because if it is given the ability to make decisions, undesirable behaviour is also permissible in the most purely human way. Thus, among other things, the pros and cons of the development of autonomous AI for human life and the limits to which they can be pushed were highlighted.

Two prizes were also awarded to the best participants in the debate.

We look forward to the next debate!
