DESCRIPTION

Considered to be one of the pioneers of media art and conceptual art in Spain, Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona, 1942) has been working for more than four decades on projects that critically reflect on key issues in the configuration of contemporary experience. His aim is to detect and decode the mechanisms of control and power through which the hegemonic gaze is constructed, exploring the decisive role played by the mass media in this process. In his works, in which he often appeals directly to the participation of the public, Muntadas uses multiple media, languages and discursive strategies, from interventions in public spaces to video and photography, from the publication of printed publications to the use of the Internet and new digital tools, from multimedia installations to the implementation of multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects.

The aim of the workshop, which will have a processual dimension, is to establish a framework for shared reflection on the problems related to communication and cultural criticism in digital environments, addressing issues such as the changing relations between the public and the private, the naturalisation of consumerist logic, the processes of cultural homogenisation imposed by globalisation, the use of the digital as a tool for legitimising and influencing economic power, the importance of the mass media in the expansion of financial capitalism, the functioning of the artistic ecosystem and the use of fear of the “other” as a strategy for social control. The workshop also aims to reflect on the configuration of the web3 as an (other) space of discursive, critical and cultural practices that are articulated on the basis of their own logics that must be analysed in the heat of the emerging technologies that configure it.

The workshop is conceived from a transdisciplinary perspective, giving space to professionals and students of Art History, Fine Arts, Communication Sciences, Computer Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering.
