UMA students, third in Telefónica's «HackForGood Big Day» with a smart bracelet that facilitates autonomy

A multidisciplinary team from the University of Malaga has won third place nationally in Telefónica's HackForGood “Big Day” with the MyKey project, an automated door opening solution using a biometric bracelet aimed at improving the autonomy of people with reduced mobility or dependence. This distinction is in addition to their previous victory in the local phase HackForGood Málaga 2024, which allowed them to represent the Telefónica-UMA Chair in the final held in Madrid.

A team of students linked to the Telefónica Chair at the University of Malaga has won third national prize in Telefónica's HackForGood “Big Day” thanks to MyKey, a fully automated door opening system based on a smart bracelet with biometric identification of the user. The project was presented in the final held in Madrid, in which the local winners from the different universities that make up the Telefónica Chairs Network competed.

The team is made up of Carla Parra and Paula Navarro, students of the Degree in Marketing and Market Research at the UMA; Iván Fernández, student of the Degree in Finance, Accounting and Business Administration at the UMA; and Miguel García, student of Computer Engineering at the University of Granada. Their proposal exemplifies the multidisciplinary nature of HackForGood, combining technological profile, business vision and focus on user experience to respond to a specific social challenge.

MyKey is a solution aimed at improving the autonomy of people with reduced mobility or in a situation of dependence, facilitating everyday tasks such as access to the home without the need to use physical keys. The smart bracelet recognises the user by means of biometric data and makes it possible to manage the opening of doors in a secure and personalised way, contributing to a more accessible and inclusive environment.

HackForGood is one of the largest university hackathons on social innovation in Spain, promoted by the Telefónica Chairs Network with the collaboration of various universities and foundations. Each edition brings together hundreds of students who develop technological solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, accompanied by mentors and specialised volunteers.

For the Telefónica-UMA Chair, this third national award is an endorsement of the ecosystem of talent that is being generated around innovation with social impact at the University of Malaga. The recognition of the MyKey project reinforces the Chair's commitment to promoting initiatives that combine technology, entrepreneurship and social responsibility, and encourages new teams of students to participate in future editions of HackForGood.
